Brakes are a control element used to slow down and stop a vehicle, incl. emergency Thus, it is also a safety feature, so operating a vehicle with faulty brakes is prohibited. The brake system is the first thing that needs to be checked before each trip, and due to the fact that it is subject to enormous mechanical loads, and, as a result, wear, the brakes require regular maintenance.
Due to the large weight of the battery, the mass of electric vehicles is greater than that of cars with internal combustion engines. On the one hand, stopping electric vehicles is associated with heavy loads on the braking system, because stopping a heavy object is more difficult. On the other hand, electric vehicles use regenerative braking, which involves almost only the engine, which reduces brake wear. Therefore, the rate at which electric vehicle brakes wear out strongly depends on driving style and how often the driver uses regenerative braking: it happens that an electric vehicle can be driven for several weeks without using the brakes if there is no need for an emergency stop.
And this has its own problems: when the brakes are idle, they rust and jam, so regardless of the mode of use of the electric vehicle brakes, they need more frequent inspection than brakes on cars with internal combustion engines.
In their design, the brakes of electric vehicles differ little from the braking system of cars with internal combustion engines. The only difference is in the mode of their use and recovery. The entire device is divided into two groups:
The braking system of electric vehicles works closely with the regenerative braking system. The principle is that when you press the brake pedal, the battery is disconnected from the electric motor, and the rotational movement from the wheels is transferred to the electric motor, which at that moment begins to work as an electric generator, recharging the battery. Using regenerative braking, the driver replenishes the charge, and if the car speed is too high, the car is stopped by the friction braking mechanism.
Currently, there are two design approaches to the interaction of frictional and regenerative braking:
Regardless of what category of braking system is used in an electric vehicle, the requirements for their brakes are higher than for the brakes of cars with internal combustion engines. And all because it is necessary to adjust the interaction of the friction brake with electric regenerative braking, for which advanced electronics are used. This means that a regular car service will be of little help in servicing and repairing the brake system of an electric vehicle.
The main cause of brake failure is natural wear and tear. The more stops along the route, especially emergency ones, the shorter the life of brake discs and pads. These parts cannot be restored - they are consumables and require complete replacement, on both axles and on all wheels at once.
The main signals that the brakes of an electric car are worn out are:
Electric transport brakes have been used for a long time, just to name trains, trams and trolleybuses, so a lot of experience has been accumulated in their design, operation and maintenance. Inexperienced drivers are often frightened by the squeaking brakes of electric cars, the inspection of which does not reveal any malfunctions. There is nothing to worry about here, and the reason for the squeak is simple: on a car with an internal combustion engine, the brakes squeak no less, but they are less audible due to the running engine. The electric motor operates silently, so all sounds are heard more clearly.
Nevertheless, from a certain point on, brake noise makes the ride uncomfortable and becomes a reason for diagnostics, regardless of other symptoms.
It is recommended to check the brakes of electric vehicles at least once a year, even if there are no signs of malfunction. Brake fluid is changed every 2 years or every 40 - 60 thousand km. mileage.
Basically, the sequence of actions when repairing and servicing the brake system of electric vehicles is the same as in the case of classic cars. But when the problem lies in a violation of the interaction of the friction brakes with the regenerative system, special equipment and skills are needed, available only in a specialized car service, the services of which we offer to use.
Our service station is engaged in the repair and maintenance of electric vehicles, within the framework of which we carry out:
Diagnostics and inspection of the brake system is carried out using precision equipment that undergoes regular verification and calibration, certified software, which allows you to objectively assess the condition of all elements of the brake system. We have no hidden fees or imposed services - you pay to fix a real problem and only for the necessary work. The results of our repairs are guaranteed.
