It may seem that electric cars differ from cars with internal combustion engines only in the power source and engine type. But few people know that the torque on electric cars is stronger, so more complex electronics are used to control it. In addition to the main engine, many models use additional electric drives that provide power to different wheels in the required proportion. Another feature is regenerative braking - the engine switches to power generation mode to recharge the battery when the electric vehicle decelerates.
All this suggests that the electronic part of cars with an electric motor is more complex than that of conventional cars with internal combustion engines. A high-current electrical circuit does not forgive mistakes: for example, if, when powered from 12 - 24V, incorrect installation of elements or violations of safety rules during intervention in the electrical circuit are not so significant, then when working on a network with a voltage of 70 - 80V, the consequences of incompetent work can be fatal. This means that the repair and maintenance of electric cars must be carried out in a specialized car service center.
Electronics in cars with an electric motor is the dominant system, which is not serviced by a car mechanic, but by an electronics engineer who performs:
Since everything in electric cars is tied to electronics, if some critical electrical components fail, the car simply will not budge. The reason may be outdated software, the absence of an electronic key to someone else’s car purchased at an American auction, but damage due to a short circuit, antifreeze on the board, corrosion or mechanical damage can also occur.
The most complex electronic device is the ECU - the nerve center of an electric vehicle, collecting readings from numerous sensors and sending signals to actuators. It has its own memory, where errors of all technical systems using electronic sensors are recorded. Errors are assigned their own code, which is read during diagnostics and, after decoding, allows the technician to determine what is the cause of the error and what is its consequence. Therefore, in most cases, electronics repair begins with studying the ECU records, but sometimes it itself requires repair (replacement).
ECU repair begins with its dismantling and disassembly. If it does not work, the reason lies in damage: usually the microcircuits are corroded or the contacts are dirty. When troubleshooting these problems does not work, the ECU must be replaced.
There is one difficulty here - each manufacturer of electric vehicles protects its interests, and therefore makes sure that a similar device of another brand cannot be connected to them. However, our craftsmen know how to make replacements, for which they use firmware - installing software that forces the ECU to interact with the electric vehicle.
An ordinary auto mechanic servicing cars with internal combustion engines does not have permission to work with high-current equipment, nor does he have knowledge of the on-board electronics of electric cars. As for the software, for electric vehicles it is more complex and varied, and a car electrician from a regular car service center cannot do much of what needs to be done.
In addition, checking the electronics of electric cars requires specific diagnostic equipment. You will find him, as well as qualified personnel who know the electronics of cars with electric motors, at our service station. All types of electronics service work are carried out with a guarantee and at reasonable prices: we are interested in ensuring that you are not disappointed in electric cars, since our well-being depends on their number in the country.
