Volkswagen ID.3 – a view from the future
Volkswagen ID.3 is the first electric car put into mass production by a German automaker. It was presented in 2019 at the Frankfurt International Auto Show. Along with it, the universal platform MEB (Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten) was presented, on which the ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6 electric vehicles were built.
Components
Volkswagen ID.3 is available in 5 trim levels:
- Life – basic version for novice owners of electric vehicles;
- Business – complete set with many practical assistants;
- Style – this configuration places emphasis on stylish design;
- Max – the package is equipped with premium equipment for the most demanding owners;
- Tour – this package includes equipment for frequent intercity trips.
Appearance
Volkswagen ID.3 - should be classified as a class C sedan. The German automaker positions its appearance as futuristic:
- smooth silhouette outlines, as if smoothed by water;
- large alloy wheels with distinctive five-spoke design and low-profile tires size 215/55 R18 or 215/45 R20;
- a windshield that flows upward with the force of the oncoming wind and turns into a glass panoramic roof.
All optics of the Volkswagen ID.3 are LED. LED lights are located in all key areas of the body. This allowed us to implement several necessary functions. For example, when the keyless entry key fob is activated, the “Leave Home” function is activated, and the LED lights projectively illuminate the path to the driver’s door.
Interior
The interior of the cabin is also designed with futuristic features. But the greatest emphasis was placed on practicality and comfort for the driver and passengers. The front and rear row seats are comfortable, with ample legroom. Increased space for the front passenger and driver was achieved by eliminating the central tunnel.
The multifunctional steering wheel has become a step into the future. Instead of traditional control buttons, it has touch zones on the surface, with the help of which the electric vehicle and multimedia system are controlled.
In addition to the driver's dashboard, the HUB projection screen provides up-to-date information, which projects speed data and road information onto the lower part of the windshield. The projection screen has augmented reality. This function tells the driver where to return.
The multimedia system allows you to listen to music, connect to the Internet, make phone calls and much more via a wireless network. The multimedia system is equipped with the proprietary Discovery Max navigation system, through which you can access the We Connect catalog of online services, as well as the proprietary DAB+ digital radio service.
The main feature of the cabin is the large panoramic glass roof, which covers both the front and rear rows of seats. Lightly tinted glass protects from the bright rays of the sun, but does not interfere with admiring the sky and clouds. If necessary, the glass roof can be closed with a curtain by voice command. The curtain also folds by voice command. In general, almost all functions and capabilities of the electric vehicle interior can be controlled using voice commands.

Volkswagen ID.3 weight and dimensions:
- length – 4.26 meters;
- width – 1.78 meters;
- height – 1.57 meters;
- wheelbase length – 2.77 meters;
- curb weight – 1.76 tons;
- trunk volume – 385 liters (with the second row of seats folded – 1267 liters).
MacPherson strut suspension and ventilated disc brakes are installed on the front axle, and multi-link independent suspension and drum brakes are installed on the rear axle.
Engine and battery
The Volkswagen ID.3 is equipped with a 150 kW electric motor and batteries with a capacity of 58 kWh. or 77 kWh. A single-stage automatic transmission is combined with the electric motor.
The German automaker provides a warranty for Volkswagen ID.3 batteries for 160 thousand kilometers or 8 years of operation. For city trips, the optimal battery charge level is 80% of its capacity. For long trips, you need to fully charge the battery, but in this mode, frequent and short stops should be avoided.
Safety
The Volkswagen ID.3 is equipped with proprietary safety features as standard:
- Front Assist. It tracks pedestrians and cyclists or other cars in front of the electric vehicle and, in the event of a critical situation, will independently brake the vehicle;
- Lane Assist is activated at a speed of 60 km/h and monitors the movement of the electric vehicle in a given lane of the road. If the assistant notices that the vehicle is not under control and is leaving the lane, then it will correct the movement of the electric vehicle;
- automatic remote control ACC will help you maintain the optimal speed limit, it adjusts the speed of the electric vehicle in accordance with speed limits or road conditions;
- The Side Assist system helps the driver safely move from one lane of the road to another. An indicator on the side mirror will alert you if there is a car in the blind spot or approaching at high speed. The system will calculate the risks that may arise when changing from lane to another. If a critical situation arises, the system can even take over control of the steering wheel;
- Area View option. Four video cameras record the space around the electric vehicle and transmit the image to the screen of the multimedia system;
- car2X road hazard warning. This system, via the Internet, learns about dangerous objects that the car must encounter;
- Park Assist Plus. This system will help you find a free parking space. This system has a memory function that will remember the process of parking, for example, near your house;
- Travel Assist, a complex of lane control assistance systems, monitors the distance to the vehicle in front.
Comfort level
Volkswagen ID.3 is equipped with:
- ergoActive front seats with electrical adjustment, memory function and sliding thigh supports;
- separate climate control for front passenger and driver;
- keyless access to the interior and keyless engine start;
- heated steering wheel.
