Nissan Ariya – traditional Japanese futurism

The Nissan Ariya electric car was first unveiled as a concept at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Show. Serial production began in 2022 at the Japanese concern's factories located in North America and Japan. In 2023, the electric car began to be exported to Europe and Ukraine.

Options

Nissan Ariya is available in four trim levels:

• Venture;
• Evolve;
• Premiere;
• Platinum.

The difference in equipment between them is as follows:

• the two lower trim levels are front-wheel drive, while the two higher trim levels are all-wheel drive;
• the basic configuration does not include a projection screen for the driver and an electric drive for the tailgate;
• in the highest configuration, the tailgate also received a Hands-free function;
• a rear view camera is installed on the crossover as standard. In all higher trim levels, the camera is replaced by a all-round viewing system (360 degrees);
• in the highest configuration, the crossover is equipped with an automatic parallel parking system.

There are no other differences between the trim levels.

Appearance

The exterior of the Nissan Ariya, with all its futurism and functionality, is designed on the traditional principles of Japanese beauty. For example, the steel sheet that replaces the radiator grille reproduces the traditional geometric Kumiko pattern in three dimensions. In addition to its aesthetic function, the steel sheet also performs a purely practical task: it protects security sensors.

In the appearance of the crossover you can see the outlines of Japanese characters and traditional symbols. In the aerodynamic extensions of the body, stretching from the front to the rear bumper through the side door, you can see the characteristic curves of the lines of the hieroglyph “order”. The rear combination lights are made in the style of Japanese minimalism "Ma". The lines of the dynamic silhouette can be compared with the lines of the “Transition” hieroglyph.

Nissan Ariya is available in 9 signature colors:

• Dark gray metallic;
• Midnight Black (deep and iridescent black);
• Midnight Purple (deep and iridescent purple);
• Prism White – white body with dark wheel arches and dark roof (Midnight Black);
• Carmine Red – red body with dark wheel arches and dark roof (Midnight Black);

• Akatsuki: Sunrise Copper – sand body with dark wheel arches and dark roof (Midnight Black);
• Brilliant Silver – silver body with dark wheel arches and dark roof (Midnight Black color).

Main technical characteristics

Dimensional characteristics of the Nissan Ariya:

• length – 4.6 meters;
• width – 1.9 meters;
• height – 1.65 meters;
• wheelbase length – 2.77 meters;
• curb weight – 2106 kg.

MacPherson strut suspension and ventilated disc brakes are installed on the front axle, and independent multi-link suspension and non-ventilated disc brakes are installed on the rear axle. In addition to the higher configuration, the Nissan Ariya is equipped with alloy wheels with tires in size 235/55 R19. In the highest configuration, the electric crossover is equipped with alloy wheels with tires measuring 255/45 R20.

Engine and battery

On the two basic trim levels, an electric motor with a power of 178 kW is installed; it creates a maximum torque of 300 Nm. Maximum speed – 160 km/h. With this engine, the Nissan Ariya crossover is front-wheel drive.

The two top trim levels have an electric motor with a power of 290 kW, which creates a maximum torque of 600 Nm. The maximum speed of this engine is 200 km/h. In this version, the crossover is all-wheel drive. A separate electric motor is installed above each axle, the operation of which is controlled by the on-board computer.

The Nissan Ariya is equipped with winding-type electromagnetic motors, which have a very high efficiency in converting direct current into torque. At the time of its creation, the Nisanov engine had one of the best efficiency in the world for converting electricity into torque.

All engines are powered by a battery with a capacity of 90 kWh. This capacity is enough for the electric car to travel 623 km without recharging with a 178-watt engine and 559 km with a 290-watt engine. The battery is fully charged from a household network (slow charging) in 12 hours. At fast charging stations, the battery will be charged to 80% in about half an hour.

The rechargeable battery operates stably both in summer and winter. To do this, it is equipped with a temperature controller that changes the level of cooling depending on its actual heating. Water is used as a coolant. The battery cools both when the engine is running and when it is charging.

Comfort level

In all trim levels, the Nissan Ariya electric crossover is equipped with:

• automatic air conditioning;
• separate climate control for driver and passenger;
• central locking and its remote control function;
• keyless access to the interior and keyless start of the electric engine;
• adaptive cruise control with autonomy level L2.

The Nissan Ariya is equipped with the ProPilot 2.0 electronic driver assistance system. It analyzes the situation on the road, receiving information from three front video cameras, twelve sonars, four side and one front radar, as well as four all-round cameras. For better route orientation, ProPilot 2.0 receives information from GPS satellites and high-resolution 3D navigation maps.

ProPilot 2.0 supports the following features:

• lane keeping;
• exit or exit from a fast highway;
• entering a turn on a fast highway with a lane change;
• overtaking a car.

If the electric vehicle is driving along a familiar route that the Nissan Ariya has driven many times, then ProPilot 2.0 controls the vehicle's movement so well that the driver may not touch the steering wheel at all.

If ProPilot 2.0 has the Navilink function installed, then this system will change the speed of the electric vehicle depending on the maximum speed limit. The system will receive this information from GPS satellites and navigation maps.

Speed limiting works in three scenarios:

• speed limit on the highway;
• control of speed in a turn depending on the curvature of the turn;
• speed control at intersections. The speed varies depending on the direction the electric vehicle is moving.

Interior lighting helps the driver understand the current status of ProPilot 2.0:

• white light – intelligent cruise control mode;
• blue color – automatic control when the driver does not have to hold the steering wheel;
• green – the navigation connection function is enabled.

The e-Pedal Step system allows you to change the speed of the electric vehicle only by pressing the gas pedal. When pressed, the electric motor increases speed and the car accelerates. If the driver releases the pedal, the electric motor slows down and the speed of the car decreases.

For driving in traffic jams or for parking, the Nissan Ariya has a special creep function. When activated, the car will slowly move forward and backward without driver intervention.

Security level

The Nissan Ariya crossover has the following active safety systems:

• front and rear parking sensors;
• a rear view camera is installed in the basic configuration; in all higher trim levels it is replaced by a all-round viewing system (360 degrees);
• tire pressure monitoring;
• anti-lock braking system (ABS);
• brake force distribution (EBD);
• Brake Assist;
• traction control system (TCS);
• stabilization system (ESP);
• active braking system;
• lift assist system;
• blind spot monitoring system.

The following passive safety equipment is installed in the interior of the electric vehicle:

• front airbags for driver and passenger;
• front and rear side airbags;
• front and rear curtain airbags;
• Isofix child seats.

In the all-wheel drive version of the Nissan Ariya, the distribution of torque between two axles is controlled by the e-4ORCE electronic system. For example, when cornering, this system optimally distributes torque between the front and rear wheels to achieve maximum tire grip.

When the vehicle slows down, energy recovery occurs, partially charging the battery. The electronic e-4ORCE system coordinates brake forces on each wheel to prevent skidding on wet or snowy roads.

In standard driving mode, when cornering, torque is optimally distributed between all four wheels. And during straight-line movement, the torque is transferred to the front axle. As a result, on straight sections of the road the electric crossover accelerates very dynamically, and it takes turns smoothly and confidently, even if these are snowy turns of a mountain road.

The Hill Descent Assist System will keep the vehicle's wheels in place for two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal.

Optionally, the Propilot Remote Parking function can be installed for the electric vehicle. It will allow the driver to control the Nissan Ariya from outside the electric vehicle. When you press buttons on a special remote control, the car will move forward and backward, which will help you park in narrow places, load things into the trunk, etc.

Conclusions

The Nissan Ariya crossover is about what Japanese cars will look like in the future. The trend of dynamism and functionality will not cancel traditional Japanese culture; it will be preserved in the latest technologies. And surely future cars from Japan will have a more expressive appearance.

In general, the Nissan Ariya is a comfortable and technologically advanced electric car. It implements many proprietary technologies of the Japanese automaker that increase traffic safety on city streets and on country roads. The crossover implements artificial intelligence functions with machine learning functions. On familiar sections of the route, artificial intelligence can completely take over control of the car.
