BYD TANG EV – a large electric car with excellent dynamics
BYD TANG EV - the electric version of the crossover SUV was presented in 2018 at the China Auto exhibition. From the beginning of 2021, the Chinese manufacturer began supplying electric vehicles to Europe.
The Chinese crossover SUV was developed together with Audi engineers and designers. Therefore, in its exterior one can feel the features of the German electric car Audi E-Tron.
Options
The BYD TANG EV electric car comes in two trim levels. The basic version is front-wheel drive, the top version is all-wheel drive, with two engines on each axle. Apart from this, there are no fundamental differences between the two versions of the electric blood heart. Thus, in the top-end configuration, the steering wheel has electric adjustment and position memory, and the side mirrors also have a position memory function.
Appearance
BYD TANG EV is actually the second generation of the BYD TANG SUV. In it, the Chinese manufacturer has implemented a new design concept, Dragon Face. It was designed by Wolfgang Egger, formerly Audi's lead designer.
The main features of the Chinese electric car’s exterior include its massive and powerful appearance. The large decorative radiator grille resembles the gaping mouth of a dragon, and the main optics are squinted dragon eyes.
Interior
The interior in both trim levels is decorated from high-quality materials that are pleasant to the touch. Armchairs upholstered in genuine leather with Alcantara inserts. Plastic elements are present in the decorated interior, but these elements are located only at foot level. The interior is decorated with decorative wooden inserts coated with piano varnish.
The external massiveness of the BYD TANG EV does not deceive. The interior is very spacious, with plenty of space in both the front and back rows. The seat for the driver and front passenger has a rich range of functions - electrical adjustment, heating, massage, ventilation, etc. Unfortunately, most of these features are missing from the rear seats. But they have a lot of free space in both the shoulders and legs. Rear row passengers have their own screen on which the separate climate control controls are displayed.
If necessary, you can raise the third row of seats. But getting to them will not be so easy, especially for people of large build. However, sitting in them is quite comfortable and convenient, there is also enough space there. When folded, the seats are completely recessed into the floor of the luggage compartment.
The trunk can be opened with a button installed on the tailgate, from the driver's seat or with a remote access key fob. But the last option becomes available only when the engine is on. The luggage compartment volume with the second row raised is 940 liters. Its configuration allows you to place large items. If you fold the second row of seats, the trunk volume will increase to 1655, which will allow you to load, for example, massive household appliances into the luggage compartment.
Main technical characteristics
Weight and dimensional characteristics of the electric vehicle:
- length – 4.87 meters;
- width – 1.95 meters;
- height – 1,725 meters;
- wheelbase length – 2.82 meters;
- weight – 2.32 tons (basic version), 2.455 tons (top versions).
MacPherson strut suspension is installed on the front axle, and multi-link independent suspension is installed on the rear axle. Despite its massiveness, BYD TANG EV, thanks to its suspension, rides quite smoothly, effectively absorbing asphalt unevenness. But the suspension has insufficient rigidity, which is why when cornering you have to make efforts to keep the heavy electric car moving along a given path.
Both axles are equipped with ventilated Bosch IPB disc brakes with Brembo calipers, which provide smooth and predictable braking. The basic version has alloy wheels measuring 255/50 R20, and the top versions have alloy wheels measuring 265/40 R22.
Engine and battery
The basic version has an electric motor with a power of 180 kW, and the top version – 380 kW. With a 180-kW electric motor, the electric car will travel 565 km without the need to charge the battery, and with a 380-kW electric motor – 505 km. As for acceleration dynamics, the basic version accelerates to 100 km/h. in 8.9 seconds, and top versions in 4.4 seconds.
In all trim levels, the BYD TANG EV is equipped with a single-speed automatic transmission. In top versions, thanks to BYD's proprietary Rael-Time technology, it automatically switches all-wheel drive to front-wheel drive for better battery conservation, and vice versa - from front to all-wheel drive for more reliable traction.
The BYD TANG EV is equipped with a proprietary Blade battery. It has been tested under the strictest conditions. Tests have shown its effectiveness, performance and safety at sub-zero temperatures. Yes, it produces almost no heat and therefore does not overheat in the summer. In the nail penetration test, the battery produces no smoke or fire. The nail penetration test simulates an internal short circuit that can occur as a result of an accident.
Each energy cup of the battery simultaneously acts as a rigidity element in the vertical direction. This increases the strength of the battery while reducing weight, which in turn improves the dynamics and handling of the electric vehicle. The guaranteed battery life is 5 thousand charge and discharge cycles.
Safety
BYD TANG EV is equipped with modern electronic safety systems and driver assistance devices. Yes, the electric car has:
- front and rear parking sensors;
- rear view camera;
- tire pressure monitoring;
- ABS;
- EBD;
- TCS;
- ESP;
- Brake Assist;
- active braking system;
- assist system for ascent and descent;
- blind spot monitoring system.
As passive safety features, the BYD TANG EV interior is equipped with two front and two side airbags for the driver and front passenger. There are curtain airbags in the front and rear rows.
The large touch screen of the multimedia system displays a navigation map and images from all-round video cameras. When reverse gear is engaged, the rear view camera image appears on the screen.
Comfort level
In all trim levels, the BYD TANG EV interior is equipped with:
- automatic air conditioning;
- separate climate control for driver and front passenger;
- separate climate control for passengers in the rear row of seats.
The multimedia system supports:
- voice control;
- Bluetooth;
- connecting additional devices via the USB connector.
The interior has decorative 31-color lighting that can be connected to the audio system, and then the colors will change to the rhythms of the music. There is a panoramic electric sunroof on the roof of the cabin.
In all trim levels, BYD TANG EV is equipped with a multifunctional steering wheel, and in the top configuration, the steering wheel has electrical adjustment and position memory. Side mirrors are equipped with:
- electrically adjustable;
- automatic storage when reverse gear is engaged;
- heating;
- position memory (top equipment only).
Conclusions
It seems that this electric car was designed with an eye on the American market, which has always loved big and fast cars with a spacious interior. BYD TANG EV fully meets these requirements. Moreover, in terms of interior equipment, level of comfort and safety, its basic version is in no way inferior to the top one.
